Other Trade News
Frog, in extending their range of lesser modelled aircraft, have provided the 1/72 scale collector with two more interesting aircraft of the 1938/40 period, in the form of the Macchi C202 and Morane Saulnier 406c. fighters. Both kits are marketed at 2s. each and make up into pleasing models.
The Macchi C202 does suffer slightly from being broken down into too many components, and the wing assembly leaves some fair-sized gaps that require filling. The sheet of transfers lacks any squadron markings and the front fuselage national marking, this being a single bundle of rods and axe.
The modeller is advised to disregard the colour schemes shown and refer to Famous Fighters of the Second World War, Vol. 1, this gives green hatches on a sand base and under surfaces painted mid-stone. A passable Macchi C200 can be produced by cutting off the engine and top fuselage and replacing with a radial engine and a humped back decking. However, the engine cowl of the C200, because of the rocker box fairings, is not the easiest to model, so this conversion is one for the more experienced modeller.
There will be some exciting additions to the Frog range of plastics during 1964. A complete new range of 1/72 kits called "Trail Blazers " has been launched, starting with the Supermarine S6.B now in the shops at 2s. 6d. Later on there will be a Spirit of St. Louis. Bristol 138 (altitude record breaker) and a Vickers Vimy. There is a new range of 1/144 scale airliners, the first model being a Super V.C.10 complete with flashing navigation lights. The existing ranges will be extended and we eagerly await the Tunkers Ju.88, which is scheduled for late summer.

TRADE NOTES
To Frog goes our acclaim for a most attractive pair in the 'Fokker D. XXI' and 'Macchi 202'. Each can accept extra titivation, and the Italian fighter is a shade overscale but their main appeal is that they can be decorated in so many different schemes. December's contribution to the Frog 2|- series is another Frenchman, the 'Morane Saulnier 406C1'. Confusion is bound to arise with the existing 'Dewoitine 520' kit of similar size and configuration: but this all makes for extra interest.

NEW KITS FROM THE U.K.
Continuing their commendable series of kits of lesser-known types, Frog have now issued 1/72nd scale kits of two more fighters—the Macchi C.202 and the Morane-Saulnier M.S.406. In some respects one of the best fighters of the Second World War, the M.C.202 Folgore (Lightning) is certainly deserving of a model, and Frog have reproduced the original faithfully. The mouldings are clean and fit together very well indeed, but the markings . . .! We queried these and were assured that they matched up exactly with photographs supplied by Aeronautica Macchi. Well, we can only say that the manufacturers of this fighter have unearthed some very unusual photographs for, apart from the incorrectly painted example of the Folgore that was much photographed in the U.S.A., we have never before seen the Fasces emblems painted on a white background on a fighter of this type as shown on the box lid! While the circular field on which the Fasces were painted was white on the upper wing surfaces of some M.C.200 Saetta fighters during the earlier months of Italy's participation in the Second World War, the white field never appeared on the Folgore in any position, the Fasces and circular outline being applied in silhouette over the normal camouflage finish. The transfer sheet does, in fact, give markings of this type, but Frog have omitted, presumably inadvertently, the fascist emblem which always appeared on the fuselage sides ahead of the cockpit and comprised a silver axehead protruding from a brown bundle of faggots on a circular blue field, and they have provided no unit markings. However, we will shortly be dealing in colour with the Folgore in the column, and we would take this opportunity to suggest to the manufacturers of the kit that the best sources of information on operational finishes and markings are not always the companies that originally built the aircraft.
The Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 kit is not quite up to the standard of the Folgore although equally welcome and another subject for our colour page in the near future. Inaccuracies appear to have found their way into the nose contours and cabin shape, but these faults can be corrected. Like that of the Folgore, the detailing of the M.S.406 is good if somewhat light, and careful work with the paint brush is necessary if detail is not to be lost.

AN EXCEPTIONAL MACCHI
One of the prettiest little aeroplanes to be portrayed by recent kits is the Macchi C.202 Folgore offered by Frog and earlier reviewed in this column (Vol. 19 No. 7). The subject of this month's colour page, the Folgore (Lightning) was every inch a thoroughbred, and was the best Italian wartime fighter to be employed in really substantial numbers. In North Africa it was flown by the Gruppi 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17, 18, 20, 23, 150, 153, 155 and 157, in the Aegean by Gruppi 21, 154 and 161, and in Russia by Gruppi 21 and 22, and after the Armistice, Gruppi 101 and 102, which had previously flown Ju 87s and Re 2002s in the dive-bombing role, reformed on Folgores within the 5° Stormo which operated with the Italian Co-belligerent Air Force.
Quite a wide variety of markings can be applied to the Folgore, although the fighter invariably sported the "sand-and-spinach" camouflage adopted by most Regia Aeronautica operational aircraft from 1942. However, there was little standardisation in the application of this camouflage, as can be seen from our colour drawings, and a dozen aircraft in any one Squadriglia could have their camouflage applied in a dozen different styles!

This was a special envelope which contained the standard issue kits in their normal boxes, as well as cement, paint and a brush. The original planning called for the Dewoitine D.520 to be included rather than the M.C.202. Due to the type of packaging used, as well as the very small number produced, this set is today rare to the point of extinction.

NEW AND IN VIEW NEW AIRCRAFT KITS
FROG.
For some little time now rumour has had it that Frog were revising and updating many of their older kits, and at the Brighton Toy Fair rumour became fact with the release of those described below. Retailing at 3/- each in a new clear plastic pack, complete with coloured dramatic art on the front and the now very popular Profile style drawings on the back of the display card, these will certainly catch the eye in any model shop display.
Each kit has had all traces of the original surface detail removed and replaced by fine and accurate new detail. Unfortunately, costs have prevented full corrections, and such refinements as cut-out wheel wells are still omitted. Cockpit canopies have received attention where necessary and are far better than in the original kits, while completely new markings and insignia are given, two alternatives being provided for each type as follows :-
MC 202 -
363 Sq. CT. 150 Gruppo C.T. 53 Stormo, Libya 1942
351 Sq.C.T. 155 Gruppo C.T. 51 Stormo C.T.
The very high standard of decals common to all Frog kits of recent months is maintained in these 'packaged' kits. AII are matt or semi-gloss with excellent register, and the minute detailing, such as that on 'kill' markings or the MC 202 insignia, is clearly readable if one uses a magnifying glass.
It is to be hoped that other kits from the Frog range will be upgraded similarly as time goes by, and we look forward to these in due course.

NEW LAMPS FOR OLD
COMMENDABLE venture by Frog is the revision of many of their older kits of 1 :72 scale aircraft models, which have just been reissued in a new series in polythene bags. All the moulds have been 're-worked' very deftly to eliminate such features as etched markings positions which marred some of the older items, and add accurate new panel detail and other surface improvements. We reviewed the old Fw 190 which had been so treated a few months back. Now this kit also appears in the 'bagged' series together with all the following: Hurricane, Tempest V, Me 109F, Typhoon, P-47, Zero, Spitfire, Sea Fury, Fokker D21, MS 406, and Macchi MC 202. Big new feature is the provision of completely new, splendidly accurate and imaginative transfer sheets, each of which gives a choice of two sets of markings. We had two samples from the range, the Spitfire and the MC 202. The Spitfire has transfers for either a Mk I of No 19 Sqn in September, 1940, or Bader's Mk Va of 1941, the quality of the new markings being excellent. Fine details include walkway markings and stencilled maintenance instructions and the modest price of the kit, 3s, would not be unreasonable for the transfer sheet alone! Whichever markings the modeller uses, he gets a spare set of value for other models. The MC 202 has a similar choice of two colourful marking schemes, probably the most accurate yet for a model of an Italian aircraft. The only improvement not possible, it seems, on the older Frog kiis is the etching out of the 'solid' wheel wells, though the average modeller can do this himself, or use solid black transfer sheet which is surprisingly effective.
This improved Frog Spitfire is certainly a 'good buy' (even with the 'solid' wheel wells), which captures the graceful character of the early Spits absolutely perfectly. Added feature of all the kits is a colour plan on the card backing sheet which acts as a painting guide for the model. On our Spitfire, however, the printing was poor and the colour guide would confuse a novice who knew nothing about camouflage of 1940! This 'new lamps for old' policy by Frog is most refreshing and should be welcomed by 1:72 scale aircraft builders. Our samples, at 3s each, came from Jones Bros of Chiswick who can supply the whole range by post.

Теперь этот набор пакуется в пакет в одной серии вместе с другими нижеследующими: Hurricane, Tempest V, Me 109F, Typhoon, P-47, Zero, Spitfire, Sea Fury, Fokker D21, MS 406, и Macchi MC 202.

FROG.

AMT Frog
AMT Corp., 1225 East Maple, Troy, MI 48084, USA.
Period: 1967-1970
AMT was, and has continued to be, a company specialising in car and truck kits. By the mid-1960s, they had become interested in diversifying into aircraft kits as well, and were thus a natural new partner for Lines Bros, after the demise of Air Lines. AMT sold the kits under the AMT/Frog label and, apart from a batch supplied by Rovex in 1968, did all moulding themselves, using Frog moulds brought over from England.
The original plans called for some 40+ Frog kits to be released by AMT, but eventually only 23 different kits got produced. While having the moulds with them, AMT had several of them (P-47, FW 190 etc.) cleaned up by removing engraved markings and other heavy surface detailing. They also added a dorsal turret (but no guns) to the P-61 and reworked the Boston/Havoc kit.
At first all kits had kit numbers type 0000, but around 1968 this was changed to A-000 for both older releases and new items. Most artwork and decals were changed at the same time.
The agreement with AMT provided Lines with a large range of AMT cars for release in Europe under the Frog/ AMT label. However, these proved to be poor sellers and this caused the co-operation between the companies to be dissolved after a couple of years.

These kits owed their existence to the lack of foreign currency in Brazil. Imports were restricted and getting a licence for non-essentials like kits was very difficult.
To get round this, Roly leased six moulds from Rovex and had the kits produced locally, moulding them in bright colours. Packaging was of the blister type (similar to Airfix) with instructions on the back. Decals and artwork were identical to the Frog issues. A small tube of "Roly-Fix" cement was also provided.
These six kits were intended as a trial run, to be followed by several other kits. But the events at Rovex and Novo caused this to be cancelled. Roly apparently still had some stocks left in the late 1970s since they placed an order with Novo in 1978 for additional clear parts for all kits.

HEMA is a Dutch chain of department stores which likes to have their own brand name on everything they sell. They bought a batch of bagged kits from Rovex in 1968 and have since bought from a number of other sources as well, e.g. Starfix. The kits are in many cases available to the local branches as an assortment only, not as individual kits.
The batch bought from Rovex were in most respects similar to the later bagged Frog issues, differing only in the brand name and the suffix H to the kit numbers. Some kits also had the price (one Dutch Guilder) and the assortment number 15521104 printed on the header cards.
A number of kits have been found with Frog stickers over the HEMA logo. Whether these kits (P-47, D.XXI, M.C.202 and possibly others) were in fact never delivered to HEMA, or if this only indicates that some surplus header cards were used up by Rovex, is not known. So far, the only proper HEMA kit confirmed is the Spitfire. The Tempest, Typhoon and M.C.202 were ordered, but there is no record of their delivery to HEMA. Some 10000 pieces were produced of each of the other kits.

The trade name Minix was owned by Rovex (today it belongs to Hornby Hobbies), who used it for special purposes when their usual trade names (Frog, Tri-ang, Scalextric, Minic, Hornby etc.) were unsuitable for commercial reasons. It has only seen limited use and only this once on kits.
So far, no actual Minix kits have been found: only an unused header card tucked away among some old Frog catalogues at the Margate factory. Despite this, there is no reason not to assume that most of the kits at least were made and delivered. However, the D.520 - although listed in the production records - was apparently only planned and not even ordered. The Bf 109 and Zero were ordered but probably never produced; possibly the ordered quantity (2,400 pieces each) was considered too small to bother with. Production figures for the remaining kits vary between 3,100 and 8,800 each. These figures plus the location and nature of the retail outlet probably explains why none of these kits have been found...
Some unused Minix header cards were used for Frog issues, the same way the HEMA and Minicraft cards were.

Period: 1969?-1974?
Bienengraber were the agents for Rovex for a number of years and, as such, imported standard Frog kits for sale in Germany. However, they did add new outer boxes to the black series bagged kits, presumably because the bagged Airfix kits were similarly reboxed by Plasty. A common box was used for all the kits, with the kit number added with a pen on the side of the box. The main colour of the box was yellow and all text was in German.
