In their 2s 9d range plastics, latest are the Thunderbolt, Typhoon, Kittyhawk and Fw190. The plastic parts are moulded in the colour of the undersides of the respective aircraft so that only the upper surface need camouflage. Future additions will include the Wellington, Hapmden, Spitfire, Lancaster, D.H.Rapide and Blenheim.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE SHOPS

A useful addition to the World War II fighters now available to plastic enthusiasts is made by Frog Kits with a new issue of no fewer than five famous fighters to 1/72nd-scale. They are the Curtiss Kittyhawk, Republic Thunderbolt, Hawker Typhoon, Mitsubishi Zero and Fw 190. Neat mouldings give the beginner a good start to a fine finish. Noteworthy feature is the separate prop-spinner which looks so much more realistic than the usual one-piece moulding for prop and spinner. (Frog. 2s. 9d. each.)

This was a special envelope which contained the standard issue kits in their normal boxes, as well as cement, paint and a brush. The original planning called for the Dewoitine D.520 to be included rather than the M.C.202. Due to the type of packaging used, as well as the very small number produced, this set is today rare to the point of extinction.

COVER COMMENT

There is a wide range of Thunderbolt kits already available covering most variants: Lindberg have recently announced that they will release a 1/72 scale kit of the P-47B/C later this year, and it will then be possible to make a model of virtually every P-47 variant.

In 1/72 scale are the old Frog and newer Airfix Razorback and Revell Bubble variants, plus an ancient and horrible Lindberg Bubble D. Of these the Frog kit is perhaps the most accurate, although on both this and the Airfix offering one has to re-shape the upper rear decking to obtain the true razor-edge of the original aircraft as owing to technical limitations the manufacturer cannot mould to this configuration. The Frog kit's wheel wells also need to be drilled out and the insignia impressed into the wings and fuselage filled in. The Airfix kit is not up to their usual standards; the parts do not fit very well and for some reason the completed model does not really look 'right'. The Revell version is grossly over-riveted and the undercarriage cover plates, like those of all Thunderbolt kits, are moulded in one piece. All the kits mentioned can, however, be assembled into very neat models.

We recommend plan pack HT2793, available, price 5/6d. post free, from Aero-modeller Plans Service, 13-35, Bridge Street, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, England. This includes highly detailed g.a. drawings of the P-47D, together with a great deal of additional information on details. This is a 'must' for anyone contemplating a model of any Thunderbolt variant.

NEW AND IN VIEW NEW AIRCRAFT KITS

FROG. For some little time now rumour has had it that Frog were revising and updating many of their older kits, and at the Brighton Toy Fair rumour became fact with the release of those described below. Retailing at 3/- each in a new clear plastic pack, complete with coloured dramatic art on the front and the now very popular Profile style drawings on the back of the display card, these will certainly catch the eye in any model shop display.

Each kit has had all traces of the original surface detail removed and replaced by fine and accurate new detail. Unfortunately, costs have prevented full corrections, and such refinements as cut-out wheel wells are still omitted. Cockpit canopies have received attention where necessary and are far better than in the original kits, while completely new markings and insignia are given, two alternatives being provided for each type as follows :-

P-47D F210F
Thunderbolt I of 135 Sqdn. R.A.F. S.E.A.C.
P-47D-22RE. G/C/ll/3 Dauphine, 4 Esc. French Air Force 1944.

The very high standard of decals common to all Frog kits of recent months is maintained in these 'packaged' kits. All are matt or semi-gloss with excellent register, and the minute detailing, such as that on 'kill' markings or the MC 202 insignia, is clearly readable if one uses a magnifying glass.

It is to be hoped that other kits from the Frog range will be upgraded similarly as time goes by, and we look forward to these in due course.

Moulded in dull silver polystyrene, this kit is marred by the rather unfortunate method of wing assembly. The lower half of the wing is moulded in one unit, including the centre section the top halves of each wing fitting separately to butt against tire wing root moulding. Howevert owing to technical difficulties, the upper wing halves do not fit particularly well, and considerable care is necessary when assembling these components to ensure accurate alignment; we found a lot of body putty was needed to hide the joint lines.

These faults are more than usually annoying as the rest of the kit is very good indeed; the rear upper fuselage section is not quite sufficiently 'razor'-edged but this is simply a matter of rubbing down to obtain the correct thickness of rear fuselage and decking. A very pleasing feature are the drop tanks, which represent the original 'paper' (actually papier mache) material from which these were manufactured; until replaced in production by the more common aerodynamically shaped tanks,. Also included in the kit are two excellent bombs. The decals are those of Major Bob Johnson's 'Penrod and Sam' and, as an alternative, the attractive markings of a 79th Fighter Group, 12th A.F. aircraft of the 8th Fighter Squadron operating in Italy.

Despite the wing-fitting faults mentioned above, this is a kit well worth buying, as if the work entailed in correcting these faults is found to be beyond one's patience the accessories in the kit can be used to improve either the Frog razorback model or the later Revell bubble-canopy version.

    NEW AND IN VIEW
    New Aircraft Kits
LINDBERG PRODUCTS INC. Republic Thunderbolt P47B. Scale 1/72. Price 8/11 (U.K.).

It is a pity that having waited so long for a 1 /72 scale P47B, this kit first announced early in 1968, on examination turns out to be a P47D. Moulded in the usual dull silver plastic, the kit has pylons moulded integrally under the wings for stores which were not introduced until the P47D-12-RE was on the production lines. Secondly the P47B was 10½in. shorter in length than either the C or D whereas the model is, in fact, slightly longer than the AIRFIX or FROG 47D Razorbacks. As on these two models the true contour of the upper rear decking has not been captured but the correct razorback line can be obtained with bodyputty and filing. Apart from this the general outline is good.

There is no detailing to represent the engine cylinders but the greatest fault is in the shape of the main undercarriage doors. These are quite hopeless and must be discarded, new ones being made from plasticard and the shape of the wheel wells corrected by cutting and filing. An aerial is not included in the kit and must be made from scrap but it should not be raked forward since it was upright on the P47D. The cockpit canopy, though a clear transparency, is a shade too shallow.

The decals are first class comprising full markings for early operational "Jugs" including U.S.A.A.F. insignia without bars. The box art portraying three P47B's carrying out a ground attack is most colourful. The only inconsistency being that both the decals and the box art apply to the early P47 whereas the kit represents a P47D.
