Vickers Wellington IC
†† F214 (1968-1976) -100 (2xRAF)

Never released. Mould date probably July 1976. No boxes or decals printed, although the decal design was completed. When the kit was first discussed, it was suggested to include a mine-sweeping ring. Most of the test mouldings later sold out were dark blue, but a few were moulded in a silver grey plastic.

In the list, the kit number is sometimes preceded by a symbol. They have the following meaning:

††   Project only; this is used for the late Frog projects for which moulds were completed and test mouldings produced, but which were never issued as Frog kits

The one that got away

When commenting upon our colour subject in this column in October, we remarked upon the need for a 1/72nd scale kit of an early Wellington variant and, in particular, a Mk Ic. Scarcely had that issue reached readers' hands when Fred Crosskey of Surrey informed us that, immediately prior to its untimely demise, Frog produced just such a kit, but never succeeded in releasing it for sale! To prove his point, Mr Crosskey kindly sent us a sample — actually a test shot, which, possibly lacking some finishing touches, was nevertheless complete and readily assemblable. Dating, of course, from some years ago, the kit is accurate and of a quality typical of Frog's late period. What a great pity that it never reached the stockists' shelves — we doubt that Frog got so far as to prepare decals, instruction sheets or boxes.

As we were given to understand that, apart from ex-enemy aircraft types, some of which were acquired by Revell, all the Frog moulds went to the Soviet Union, it is surprising that the Wellington, and, indeed, the Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon/Ventura produced at about the same time, were not released under the Novo label. The Wellington kit has a Frog catalogue number F.214, but we have never seen it in any catalogue published. Presumably, now that the Novo label has joined that of Frog in the Valhalla of all plastic kits, wherever that may be, we shall never see the Wellington kit released. Perhaps Humbrol-Heller might consider an early version of the Wellington a suitable subject for a future release?

This is another major producer of ex-Frog kits. Most of the kits come in bags with simple header cards inside the bags, although a few (particularly the larger ones) are boxed. Artwork is clearly based on the Frog originals and of fair quality.

As can be seen below, the numbering is a bit chaotic Most kits have no numbers on the packaging itself, instead it appears on a small paper slip which is often missing. It seems likely that the factory has some trouble putting the right slip with the right kit!

All kits found to date have been moulded in a pale grey colour.
